I’m not even american, but i’m curious: why the importance given to "patriotism"? What does it even mean to be patriotic? Why is that characteristic given more importance than competence, honesty, modesty and reliability?

Obama – McCain can barely stand at all.
But seriously – I think your "superhero" vision of patriotism needs some work.
I don’t think you can question either candidate’s patriotism. I think they both love this country more than most people.
Jon Stewart had a great comment last night – "everyone knows that conservatives love their country. They just hate half of the people in it."

I don’t believe that patriotism belongs to one party or one belief system. Every American I know–blue or red, black or white, young or old–loves this country. I do not agree that one group gets to claim the flag and love of country above other groups. Sorry!
I believe both McCain and Obama love their country, but they disagree on how to solve the problems facing the country.
Furthermore, as to another comment you made, only God knows for sure when life begins. It has been discussed and argued for thousands of years by smarter men than we are. You are entitled to your opinion, but it is just an opinion, just as is what happens after death. Only God knows, and that’s what Obama was saying.
The fact that one candidate is more dogmatic and forceful than another–and frankly, more of a know-it-all–does not mean he is more correct or more qualified.

I closed my eyes. I heard the Star Spangled Banner. And I saw Ronald Reagan.

I think McCain definitely APPEARS to be more Patriotic. Especially since he is symbolic as a war hero.
