New beetle? The newer the better. VW had some notoriously bad reliability issues in the mid-90s-early-2000s.

Not a good idea. An original beetle would likely give you less trouble. Your CAVALIER is likely to give you less trouble.
Current VW owners aren’t to be trusted. They love their cars so much (the fit and finish, the various little VW quirks, the quality of the physical construction, and the handling) that they’re willing to overlook all sorts of things that would be deal-breakers for most cars. Mazda RX-7 owners are exactly the same way, as are some fans of British and Italian cars (except they have so much trouble that even they can’t ignore it, they just accept it).
Get the opinions of FORMER VW owners. Then decide whether you like the car enough to risk the hassle.

I’m just curious why in the world would you want a beatle? Too make matters worse it’s so small if you’re in an accident pardon the pun but you’re going to be squashed like a bug. My suggestion is find a newer car with about the same amount of mileage. Plus a 7 year old car for 7975 is a rip off!

Don’t worry about the guys who’ve never been IN a New Beetle. Mine’s a ’98 and she’s never let me down.
That bug IS a good deal. However 2001 was a bit oil-thirsty.
Not a reliability problem, the engine works fine, it just burns oil a bit. Other years don’t have this. Also, that IS a fairly good deal. What you want to know before buying it: was the timing belt and water pump changed on it yet? It’s an every 80k maintenance item, but because of the age of the vehicle, you’d want to look out for it anyway.
Here’s the place to go for all your research:

It’s where the owners hang out and help each other.

I have friends that have 3 beetles at their house. One for their daughter and one for each of them. There is a 98,2000, and 2004. They bought the cars brand new and I have been maintaining them all along. I have done more work to the 2000 than any of the others. What I have noticed though is the 2004 is prob. the best year to get because they made a few good changes to the car and fixed problems that will no longer occur that were with earlier models. So I would suggest getting an 04 and you will be very happy with it.

Best year for a Beetle? 1970. Last year for the pre-emissions Standard Beetle, but had the 63hp 1600 engine.
