After a lively 2 1/2-hour public hearing, the Lexington City Council voted 4-1 to allow only U.S., Virginia and city flags to be flown. Personal displays of the Confederate flag are not affected.

Many speakers complained that the flag was an offensive, divisive symbol of the South’s history of slavery and shouldn’t be endorsed by the city of 7,000 people.

"The Confederate flag is not something we want to see flying from our public property," said city resident Marquita Dunn, "The flag is offensive to us."

"I am a firm believer in the freedom to express our individual rights, which include flying the flag that we decide to fly," said Philip Way, a Civil War re-enactor dressed in a Confederate wool uniform despite the summer temperatures. "That’s freedom to me."

However the City does not limit Personal displays of the Confederate flag.Only United States owned Flag Poles in the city can have U.S.A, Virginia and city flags to be flown.

City Manager T. Jon Ellestad noted that the ordinance only affected city property and wasn’t specifically aimed at the Confederate flag. "They can carry their flags anywhere they want," he said.

People complained "that displaying the Confederate flag is very hurtful to groups of people," Ellestad said. "In their mind, it stands for the defense of slavery."

Before the rally, ordinance opponents rallied in the city park, then marched to the hearing under a parade of Confederate flags.

"These are the things that make Lexington what it is," said Knight, who didn’t participate in the rally. "The Confederate flag is part of our heritage."

The city received hundreds of complaints in January, the last time Confederate flags were planted in holders on light poles, to mark Lee-Jackson Day.

Such complaints convinced city leaders that they should have clear guidelines governing the flying of flags and banners on light poles, Ellestad said.

Lee, who led Confederate forces during the Civil War Against the U.S.A before surrendering at Appomattox in 1865, became president of what is now Washington and Lee, where he is buried.

"By all means they should be honored in their hometown," said Brandon Dorsey, commander of Camp 1296 of the Stonewall Brigade of the Confederate Veterans. "I look at the flag as honoring the veterans." of the Confederate.

The April 16 rally in San Juan Capistrano, California, corresponded with more than 100 Tea Party rallies scheduled across the country for that Saturday. It was promoted on the website of Tea Party.org, also known as 1776 Tea Party, one of six well-established Tea Party umbrella groups. Its true organizers, however, were from American Third Position, or A3P, a white nationalist political party founded by racist skinheads. A3P did not respond to repeated inquiries for this article. Neither did 1776 Tea Party.

Since April 2010, A3P members have organized, co-sponsored or freely distributed literature at no fewer than 10 Tea Party rallies in six states, including Augusta, Georgia; Harrison, Arkansas; Baton Rogue, Louisiana and throughout California, where A3P was founded in May 2009 by Freedom 14, a racist skinhead crew seeking to establish a more respectable-seeming political front group.

Although it would be unfair to characterize the Tea Party movement on the whole as white nationalist, it’s clear that large gatherings of angry, conservative, predominately white Americans are viewed with relish by groups like A3P.

"The Tea Parties are fertile ground for our activists," said A3P Pennsylvania Chairman Steve Smith. "Tea Party supporters and the A3P share much common ground with regard to our political agendas."

I was there yesterday and surprised that it was so far away.

on a side note, I LOVED Ottawa (I’m a Montrealer, a habs fan, but Ottawa is my second favorite team) Ottawa is a beautiful city, almost made me want to move there lol

It was amazing to see all the "Go Sens Go" banners all over the city, the amount of flags I saw on cars was unbelievalbe, (amazing and so quietly eerie at the same time, it was sad to see) and the Statue on Elgin street of the senator with the skates and stick was perfect, loved it.

Congrats on having such a beautiful city

Our orientation tells us to not wear anything that says "USA", sports team logos, etc. Maybe I’m just being paranoid, but I don’t want to be a target because of a tattoo…. Any thoughts? Peruvians have any input?

For the answerer saying buying bonds, sure that’s a good idea, but people may want to display the fact that they are actively helping out the economy and you can’t wear a bond. I think some answerers are missing the point of the T-shirt. It’s not meant to be some technological marvel. Instead, it would be meant to boost morale, give Americans a sense of pride and accomplishment that they might be helping, abeit in some small way, towards helping out our country in a time of need. It’s more of a symbolic gesture than anything. The T-shirt price could be cheaper, I just sort of pulled that number out of thin air trying to account for manufacturing costs, so let’s not get too fixated on that.

BASEBALL
No collisions allowed at home. There will be a second "home plate" for the runner. If the throw beats him, the catcher only needs to touch the main home plate. Furthermore, since the ball can cause injuries, there must be a 3-centimeter marshmellow over the ball. Curve balls are banned. They cause too many elbow injuries. Teams are required to use pitching machines instead of pitchers. No running is allowed on all warning tracks to prevent collisions with walls, which must be make of cloth. All players should wear sensors to warn them if they are within 6 feet of another player, and if any player continues sprinting after a sensor goes off will be suspended for the remainder of the season. Also, all players will be required to wear miniskirts and the Tampax logo will replace team logos on uniforms and caps.

BASKETBALL
No can is allowed to swipe at the ball to prevent unnecessary pokes in the eye or broken nails. To play defense, all players must have both hands straight up in the air. Layups cannot be contested because there is too much contact in the paint. Jumping is strictly forbidden because too many injuries happen from landing on another players foot. Anyone caught jumping will be suspended for the season. A second offense is a lifetime ban.

FOOTBALL
In addition to not being allowed to touch the quarterback’s head, defensive players also are not allowed to touch his arms, legs or torso. Tackling and blocking are eliminated. All players will wear flags, and when the player with the ball has his flag pulled, the play is over. Linemen are allowed to cause interference, but any physical contact will result in an ejection. If any defensive player touches any part of the quarterback’s body, he will be suspended for the season.

So you raise your hand…

The spotlight shines on you as you rise and start walking towards the playing area. Your friends are looking at each other in surprise, as they realize your about to do an impromptu "Star Spangled Banner" in front of everybody. The tech guy hands you a microphone and leads you out to the center of the playing area and you stand there while the crowd goes completely silent, waiting for your performance.

As you open your mouth and sing the first line, you realize that your voice has been transformed, as if by a divine presence, into a majestic, beautiful singing voice. Like a combination of Stevie Wonder and Pavarotti. Just as you get to "And the rockets red glare.." The marching band joins in! And simultaneously, an enormous American flag unravels behind you. Your singing is so beautiful, people begin to weep uncontrollably, sick people are healed, cripples get up to walk…

As you finish the song and walk back to your seat, the crowd goes absolutely batshit crazy with cheer and praise. The cheerleaders flash their tits at you, the coaches and players shake your hand and hug you..

You see your crush in the crowd smiling, with tears rolling down her face as she runs to meet you, embracing and telling you she loves you.
