Most companies spend a lot on branding. This means, in part, taking an easy-to-remember logo or motto and making an instant association between it and your company in the minds of the public. While white and black are the obvious answers for not creating clashes between the color of an item and the colors on your logo, you may want to try bolder colors, if they fit. Banks, for instance, have long used the color blue in their advertising and in their lobbies as it tends to be associated with trust. If you’re an outdoor adventure company, you might want to use blaze orange colors to invoke hunting and other outdoor activities. A diving company may want to use red and white to reference the diver down flag. There are plenty of ways to get creative where color is concerned.
If you have a graphic designer to help you or if you know color theory pretty well yourself, you should apply some thought to whether or not you want to scale down or simplify your logo for some purposes. When you’re printing your logo in a very small format, consider simplifying it by making the most distinctive elements bolder and by suppressing some of the details. You can do the same with color. If you normally have a three-design for your logo, you may be able to reduce it to a two color design for small promotional items, such as pens, while still keeping it recognizable.
You’ll also want to consider whether you want to include a corporate motto or an ad slogan on the promotional items you order. In this case, it’s usually better to stick with fewer words. If your company has a specific event that the ad specialties will be used to advertise, having the dates on the items is a good idea. Designing great promotional materials is a challenge, but it can pay off in a big way. If you want your logo recognized instantly, you have to get it out there in as many forms as possible.
