More Fun Than A Barrel of Monkeys

My mother is a special person.

My mother makes friends with every person she ever meets. She is the most fun person I know. My friends love to hang out at my house because my mom is so laid back. I come home sometimes to find my friends hanging out with my mom without me even knowing! My mom throws better parties than anyone in my class!

The party my mom threw for my friend Monkey was a masterpiece.

One of my mom’s parties stands out above all the others. It was a surprise party for my friend Monkey. I have been friends with Monkey since I was about three years old, so he knows my mom really well and the two of them love to joke around together. On Monkey’s 10th birthday, he wanted to go to the zoo, so my mom took a group of us for an afternoon. Without any of us kids knowing, before we arrived at the zoo my mom arranged for the zoo officials to set up a party beside the monkey and chimp exhibit. My mom goes all out with decorations. From streamers and balloons to cakes and candy, my mom made sure they did it all.

When we first got to the zoo, before we ever made it to the primates, we noticed several oddly placed vinyl banners over the walkways that all directed us towards the monkey exhibit. Upon first sight, these vinyl banners appeared to be nothing more than directional banners, but as we noticed more and more of them our curiosity got the better of us and we headed towards the primates. When we entered the exhibit it was like entering the pages of The Jungle Book. The exhibit was closed off to the other people at the zoo, and throughout the area there were monkeys roaming free. Yellow streamers adorned the walls and made us feel as if we were living in the wild amongst a family of monkeys! There were also big bushels of bananas cautiously set up in different locations throughout the room, as well as empty barrels with monkeys crawling in and around them. It was an amazing sight!

Once we were all in the room, my mom had us gather around and pointed to a bare wall on the other side of the exhibit. To our surprise, a huge custom banner unraveled all of a sudden and covered up the bare wall. The custom banner read “Happy 10th Birthday Monkey!” The custom banner was the biggest I had seen that day! This giant banner made all of the others from earlier that day make sense, as each custom banner was designed and decorated in the same fashion.

Monkey’s surprise 10th birthday party was one I will never forget!

Monkey was grinning from ear to ear. My mom brought a box that Monkey now uses to store his giant custom banner. That banana shaped custom vinyl banner is a great reminder of the fun day we had at the zoo and is a perfect example of my mom’s creativity!

State Flags and Banners – Michigan

The state of Michigan is one of 50 states in the U.S.A. The American Bald Eagle was officially adopted as the (unofficial) recognition of the U.S. back in 1782. Official acceptance did not come till a good 6 years later, following much discussion and debate by the political leaders in those days. Like the Michigan state flag, the Bald Eagle is shown on a variety of flags, and can be seen flying from commercial and residential flagpoles in our day. It was not till 1907 that the state flag of Michigan displayed the U.S. coat of arms, following some years where it displayed the portrait of the then sitting Governor.

Banners and Flagpoles – The National Flag of Japan

Japan is one of my favorite countries in the world in terms of culture and history. Their respective flag as shown on flag poles of all kinds, displays a red disk on a white background. Not surprisingly, the red colored disk symbolizes the sun and is position exactly in the middle of the flag. Unlike other historical flags, the flag of Japan knows quite a bit of controversy with regards to its meaning, especially in Japan.

Referred to as “Nisshoki,” but more commonly as the “Hinomaru,” this fascinating banner was adopted officially back in 1999, a little more than one decade ago. Interestingly, no earlier official national flag was really in existence before that time. However, back in the 19th century, 2 proclamations issued by the so called “Daij-kan,” each had a provision for a new design of the national banner. In 1870, the sun-disk flag was accepted as the national flag for merchant vessels at sea as well as flown from flagpoles by on vessels under rule of the Japanese Navy.

Different representations or perceptions of the banner are in existence. To some inhabitants of Japan, the flag is said to be a fitting representation of the territory. To others, the flag is said to symbolize the events surrounding World War 2. In fact, the use of both the anthem and the flag has been cause of contention for public schools in Japan ever since World War 2. The flag is not flown from flag poles and such often because it is also said to associate with extreme forms of nationalism.

The earliest recorded flags in the history of this country date back to the unification period of the sixteenth century. The very first national banner was adopted was attached to a flag pole back in 1870.
