Being the new kid, let’s face it, we’ve all been there before. Eleven-Year-Old Lily Beals hopped out of her uncle’s old run down maroon car to her new boarding school, Eastwick Academy. Lily was always a diligent and sincere worker; she didn’t have many friends back at her former school in Massachusetts, which meant she had more time to study, which surely paid off since she was a given a scholarship to this fine boarding school in a small town in New York. Her uncle forcefully threw her belongings at her chest that were packed in a scarlet and gold bag with the American flag logo attached to it, then he drove off without a word.
Lily had the impression that her uncle never actually cared for her, he never pays attention to her, all he does is sit around on the computer and look at maps all day. Lily’s mother was a smoker and died of lung cancer when she was only four, and she never met her father before, she’s had thoughts about him and hypothesis of what he looks like, but never remembered seeing him. She honestly had no intention of meeting him to be honest. What kind of idiot leaves his daughter and his wife in their time of need?
Lily then caught sight of children being dropped off by their parents or grandparents. Some children looked her age, others older. There were so many kids; it should be easy for her to make at least one friend. She saw some kids from show choir singing a welcome song that went like this:
"Welcome, welcome, welcome in,"
"Welcome back to school my friends,"
"Welcome back to school today, we are here to sing and play."
The red brick building was lofty and there were so many windows, she was trying to identify which would be her classroom, on her orientation paper, she had been informed her homeroom class was 1A.
She then caught sight of a large black lake beside the trees. She plugged her nose in disgust; there were flies swarming around and a whole bunch of lily pads. Who knows what lay under there? About ten feet away from the black lake she heard a frizzy haired thin girl pleading for mercy.
"Come on, guys! I honestly do not have any money!" She yelled while being dangled from her feet by two obese goons. Lily didn’t think there were bullies at this school. Guess they’re everywhere… She knew what it was liked to bullied everyday by some kid, the worse part about it was that she never knew when it was coming. Every time a locker would slam, she’d jump thinking it was a bully. She wouldn’t let the same happen to an innocent soul. She didn’t want to engage in battle; but she did have to do something, everyone else was nonchalantly walking by. She didn’t think it would hurt to kindly ask to them to put her down.
"Hey guys," The bullies turned around and looked down at Lily. "I really don’t think she has any money, so if you could please just let her down–" Lily was interrupted by their screechy laughs. The one of the left dropped the girl roughly then pulled Lily by her gray uniform sweater vest then shook her up and down and heard coins jingle.
"Alright, runt, give me your cash and I’ll let the ginger go," His eyes narrowed.
"I don’t really think you have the authority to steal money from anyone at this school, and if a teacher finds out what you’re doing, you’re sure to end up in detention." She tried to stay strong, she didn’t want the bully to get the satisfaction, not this time.
The bully pushed Lily into the lake. It was ice cold, her uncle never bothered to sign her up for swim lessons, he thought she’d have no hope and sink which was what she was going to be experiencing now. She then felt something clammy wrap around her arm. She was being pulled, she had no idea what creature it could be, as she was pulled she realized she was going up, not down. She coughed when she was at the top of the lake, she was soaking wet and her glasses her fogged. She then saw the frizzy haired ginger girl staring at her smiling.
"Brilliant you are," She brought Lily into a surprise hug. Lily spit water out of her mouth behind Maggie onto the trimmed green September grass. "You’re a hero."
"Really? Because I think I swallowed a flounder." Lily put her hand under and chin and attempted to throw it up, but no luck.
"Don’t be silly, there’s no fish in there. Although my older sister Ashley believes there may be trolls," She shrugged. "Maggie Watson," She extracted her right hand to shake.
"Lily Beals," Lily formed a thin smile upon her face then coughed into her sleeve then shook her hand.
"Come on, let’s go to a teacher and get you some clean closes." Maggie headed towards the building and Lily followed as well.
