Can anyone identify my grandfathers ring?
The ring is engraved with initials and "1913" The crest kind of looks like the 1st Cavalry Division army patch but instead of a horse head there is three reverse decrescents (like a crescent moon making a backwards C). The Bend goes from the top left to the bottom right and the dexter field/base has what looks like either a feather or a comet….maybe even a star with some kind of wing. one side is faded but the other is still kind of visible, an eagle wings spread facing the left holding a vertical flag looking symbol with four dots and 6 or 7 vertical stripes. Looks like the crest is on an onyx setting. I am trying to figure out if it is a military ring or what. If It is what unit it was for etc. I have looked on the internet and cant find anything so please dont suggest google. If any WWII vets know please share your knowledge. Thank you. It does look like a military ring, but I can’t determine which branch (though the wings on the side make it possibly air force). You might try posting it to a veterans’ website (http://www.vetfriends.com
has a photos page) to see if anyone recognizes it. However, it ALSO looks like it could be a family crest ring –the backwards crescent moons and the shield shape makes me think this.
You might also send a picture of it to this site–http://www.militaryringexpress.com/category/4108298. They make custom military rings and maybe someone there could identify it.
The 1913 could either be the year your grandfather was born; his graduating class (this could be his school’s class ring. Try this site, too, if you would know where he went to school: http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia); or prior to WW1.

You will first have to determine the blazon. From the pictures it looks like maybe there was once yellow inlay that has worn, but behind the yellow is some hatching for vert (green), or is that there just to hold the inlay? I can’t tell from the picture. Even a partial blazon would help. What is the yellow stuff? Then are the crescents facing inward or dexter? What is the charge below the bend?
When you have the blazon you can use google fruitfully because it has both military and personal ordinaries and the charges. You could search the ordinaries and charges by hand but it will take years. I hope you find someone who will recognize it.
