Activities for Argos, Greece?
We are studying Greece in S.S. and like my teacher is making it fun and like we have debates on stupid stuff like twilight is better than marley and me and stuff like that..any who
we are divided up into city-states.
I am in Argos
To rack up points(money)
,you have to be creative and bring in cool things.
Ex. Athens brought in flags, banners, paper acropolis, etc.
Sparta brought snakes, flags, matching T-Shirts, they have a few chants, etc.
We have a flag and abanner and we each have a lil flag
any other ideas to bring in?

Bring something that resembles a cow for Hera

lmao! that’s my town!(small world, ha?)
we didn’t usually do school projects like these, so it sounds a bit odd to me(flags and banners and stuff), but i’ll do my best to get in your school spirit.
1)First of all, you should know that Argos was probably the only city in Greece (and some say in Europe) that hasn’t stopped being inhabited continually since it’s beginning. It’s one of the most ancient in Europe. They say, that our city was ruined by nature disasters, fires or wars, and re-build, seven times.
Seven is a good symbolic number you could play with too.
2)Our ancient deity was Hera, (protector of our city and some of her most important temples in the Greek world were in Argos), the Queen of Gods, and the only woman that could make Zeus wet his pants off.
She was usually holding pomegranates, and she was protector of marriage, and any other matters that involved ‘faith’ and ‘loyalty’.
She did had a bad temper, but who wouldn’t when they had to deal with a womanizer husband God and all that injustice in the world?
3)anyway, there are also many myths in the area of Argos, apart the ones that concern Hera, like the myth of Lernean Hydra, the beast with the nine or seven heads that was killed by Hercules with a smart way(even though it seemed impossible in the start, ’cause the beast could ‘grow back’ new heads everytime someone was cutting one), i suggest you to read the myth. The ‘real’ story behind this, is that the beast represents the seven water springs that are in the area that caused many floods in the past.
Another myth you should also check, is the one talking about Danaus and his 50 daughters. The myth actually describes the connection between Mycenaean civilization with Egypt.
4)The mycenaean civilization is another issue you can’t miss from your project.Even though it was just 10 km away, now days these two cities seem like they have a common history, since Argos was deeply influenced by Myceaneans. Their story is endless, but a quick way to ‘represent’ the civilization is to make masks of gold (yeah yeah, yellow paint) those were made for the dead people, i know it sounds creepy, they used to put a thin golden layer over the dead face, and their face was printed on the ‘mask’ forever.

5)Another important issue, is the ‘invention’ of drachma (the currency of Argos and the name of our currency ’till 2002, where we replaced it with euros.) It’s called ‘drachma’ from the word ‘δράττω’ meaning ‘hold’,'grab’.
That’s because one drachma were usually 6 long spits, something like metal sticks, that you were holding in your hand.

Later on, an Argean King cut the first coins on an island outside Argos, Aigina island. According to AAristotlethe philosopher, that King was the first one to cut coins in Greece.
Argos was also famous for it’s pottery, sculpture, tanneries, literature etc.
6)The Spartans invaded the Argos city-state, and since then the people of Argos were sworn enemies with Spartans. They also joined Athens because of that. "The enemy of my enemy is my friend" situation.
7) Argos was where the 1st,4rth,and 5th Greek National Assemblies held during our Greek War of Independence against the Turkish (ottoman) occupation.
An idea:idk if you’re gonna like it.
So, if i were you, i would make a 7 head beast, and each ‘head’ would tell the stories of Argos. One would wear a golden mask, another would hold ‘drachmas’, another would wear a warriors’ helmet (lol) and talk about the conflict Argos had with Sparta (and why not, a brief story of a warrior from Argos saying how he managed to stab his Spartan enemy with a kung fu move! hahaha) and so on.
Either way, beat all the rest city states!!!! do it for me! :,) *this is so touching, awwwww*
